Highlights of Chittagong
The ever busy Chittagong is the port city of Bangladesh. With a population of 3.9 million it is the second largest city in Bangladesh. After Dhaka the capital. This natural harbour lies in the crossroads of the Indian sub-continent and South East Asia. Indeed it is the gateway to the old region of Bengal.
Arab traders had dominance over the city in the 9th century. They were well developed with the skills of money exchange, trading and shipping. These were superseded by muslims in the 14th century. It became an international hub for transportation. Then the Kingdom of Mrauk-U took control. With the help of the Portuguese settlements. The port was the centre of the slave trade and piracy. In addition to Arab traders, they came from Denmark, the Netherlands and Portugal. This kingdom lasted from 1429 to 1785. However they lost control of Chittagong in 1666 to the Mughal Empire. Thereafter the Mughals reigned until the 18th century. Then the city fell to the invasion of the Burmese Empire.
The British East India Company then took it over in 1760. Using it as its chief port in the region under the British Raj. With this the city then became a hub for a railway network. An anti-colonial uprising was quashed in 1930. As World War approached it became an important base for the Allied forces. Following the war, industrialisation took place. And the region became part of East Pakistan. Then in 1971 the Bangladesh Liberation War resulted in a win for the Bengali independent movement. Finally Bangladesh had won its independence. Consequently Chittagong hosted the signing of the independence treaty.
As a result of such influences in the history of Bangladesh, it is no surprise that architecturally there are many things to see. Religious sites of importance include the Chandanpura Mosque and Kaibalyadham Ram Thakur Ashram for Hindus. Also the Shrine of Bayazid Bostami.
Being a coastal town, the beaches are popular. One such beach is Neval Beach. Additionally try Patenga Beach. Furthermore there are many green recreational areas to escape the city. Try Boga Lake, Vatiary Lake or Karnaphuli River.
If it is peace and quiet you seek, then try the Chittagong Commonwealth War Cemetery. It is itself a main tourist attraction. Similarly try the Zia Memorial Museum.
Looking for authentic food? Then try Bonanza Food Plus, Handi and Dhaba. Alternatively Tai Wah Restaurant offers the most authentic Chinese food.
