Kungoni Centre of Culture
Lilongwe City is the capital of the African country of Malawi. It has a population of 989,318. Moreover it is an economic and transportation hub for central Malawi. Indeed its name comes from the Lilongwe River. As a city, Lilongwe started to modernize around 1970s and ’80s when they began to build the Lilongwe International Airport. The railway system was next. It links Salima to the east, and the Zambian border to the west.
Furthermore, an agricultural program to grow tobacco on the fertile lands of the Central Region Plateau began around this time too.
Besides the development of infrastructure, the Kungoni Centre of Culture and Art began to emerge. It is a non-profit organisation in central Malawi. Kungoni is located in Mua, a village in the Dedza district. About 60 km from Salima. Landscaped with tropical trees and shrubs, Kungoni is easily accessible. Being about a two hours drive on an asphalt road from Lilongwe and three from Blantyre.
In addition there is a historical and cultural museum located in Blantyre. Its name is the Chichiri Museum. Also known as the Museum of Malawi. Also don’t miss the Tindoz d’Afrique Home of African Arts and Crafts. Handcrafted goods are showcased by local designers and artists from the Southern part of Africa. However if you wish to connect with nature, then try the Lilongwe Wildlife Centre. This is one of Lilongwe Wildlife Trust’s projects which runs along 180 hectares of woodland. It is Lilongwe’s only protected wilderness, and it is the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.
