The Cape Winelands of Paarl, Western Cape, South Africa
Located in the Western Cape Town province in South Africa, Paarl is a charming city steeped in natural wonders, history, and culture. In addition it has a rich tradition of winemaking. It is the third oldest European settlement in the country. Moreover it is the largest town in the Cape Winelands with a population of 191,013.
Paarl takes its name from the huge granite outcrop standing on the crest of Paarl Mountain. In 1657, Abraham Gabemma led an expedition from the Cape in search of resources. He eventually came across this giant granite rock. This particular rock is significant because it is the second-largest granite outcrop in the world.
The city of Paarl became internationally known when Nelson Mandela walked out of Drakenstein Correctional Centre ending 27 years of imprisonment. Thereafter the post-apartheid era of South Africa began.
A tour around Paarl allows you to know and appreciate the city with its surrounding countryside. One of the most important Afrikaans monuments is here. The Taal Monument was erected in 1975 on Paarl Rock to commemorate the semi centenary of Afrikaans as an official language. Hiking up to Paarl Rock is worth a visit to see the awe-inspiring scenery.
