Highlights of Lumbini
Lumbini – the birth place of Buddha
Lumbini is 203 km west of Kathmandu, Nepal’s capital. If you were to go by road, the distance is 290 kms. Moreover it would take you approximately 7 ½ hours to get there.
Lumbini takes its firm place in Nepal’s history as a Buddhist pilgrimage site. Indeed it is Buddha’s birth place. Born the son of Queen Mahamayadevi, Siddhartha Gautama achieved enlightenment about 500 years before Jesus Christ. Therefore the foundation of Buddhism is an older than that of Christianity.
As a result of this, many of the places to see in Lumbini are connected with Buddhism. Take for example The Holy Pond, “Puskarini”. This is where the Queen had her last bathe before giving birth. And later was the first place that her son bathed.
Temples abound. One such temple is the Maya Devi Temple. It is the top tourist site in the area. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is the main temple of Lumbini. It is next to the Holy Pond, which also has a sacred garden. Being Buddha’s birth place there is a glass to protect his actual birth place. You can also see the ruins of what was once his home. A highly spiritual place, it is a place to gather your inner thoughts.
The World Peace Temple is another must see. Located outside Lumbini Park, it is a white Japanese stupa. One visitor describes this place as “soothing beauty”. It is actually one of 80 word wide peace pagodas promoting harmony and peace. Highly recommended to visit this place at sunset, especially if there are any monks chanting within. In a similar light, there is an Eternal Peace Flame. Brought over from the United Nations in New York, it commemorates International Year of Peace in 1986. It overlooks a canal, in the Lumbini Park Complex.
Other monuments have an Asian feel to them. The Dae Sung Shakya is a Korean Temple, whereas the Royal Thai Monastery has a distinct Thai feel befitting its name. In addition there is a Myanmar Golden Monastery.
Most of the temple and monastery landmarks are well preserved. In contrast the Kudan Stupa is a site of ruins but of significant religious importance. It is a site where Buddha met his father.
Following the importance to learning, there is also a Lumbini Buddhist University. The idea of this came about from the First World Buddhist Summit which was held in Lumbini in 1998. Officially formed in 2004, the university is still under construction.
