Tlaxcala is a small, vibrant state in central Mexico with a rich history, distinctive culture, and delicious regional cuisine. Indeed Tlaxco is a town that embodies many of the area’s most compelling traditions. Tlaxco is a municipality in Tlaxcala so there are similar towns in the same state including Tlaxcala City.

History of Tlaxco

Tlaxco sits in the heart of a region that was a pivotal crossroads during pre-Columbian and colonial eras. The Tlaxcalans, an indigenous group allied with the Spanish against the Aztecs, played a crucial role in the conquest of central Mexico. This history shaped Tlaxco’s identity, from its colonial churches and plazas to its enduring festivals that weave indigenous and Catholic traditions. During the colonial period, Tlaxco developed as an agricultural and crafts center, with haciendas and market days that brought people from across the region. In more recent times, Tlaxco and its surroundings have preserved archeological sites, traditional crafts, and a strong sense of community that keeps history alive in the present day.

Culture of Tlaxco

Taxclo’s culture is a tapestry of indigenous roots and Mexican mestizo influences.

You’ll find colorful markets, where artisans sell handmade textiles, pottery, and leather goods alongside seasonal produce. Religious celebrations, processions, and feasts mark the year, often blending Catholic saints’ days with indigenous rituals.

Folkloric dance, mariachi music, and local crafts are part of everyday life, reflecting a community that values family, hospitality, and tradition.

The town’s architecture includes adobe houses, colonial churches, and a central plaza. All offer a window into its layered past and enduring identity.

Cuisine of Tlaxco

Tlaxco’s cuisine showcases the region’s agricultural bounty and the fusion of Indigenous and Spanish influences. Expect dishes that emphasize corn, beans, chili peppers, and hearty meats. Staples include atoles and tamales, often flavored with cheeses and herbs. Regional specialties might feature dishes like mole poblano variants, barbacoa, carnitas, and seasonal stews. Local markets highlight fresh produce, roasted chilies, and farmstead cheeses. For a complete tasting, seek out a traditional Tlaxco mercado (market) visit to sample regional snacks and street foods.
