City of Francistown

Welcome to Francistown, Botswana’s second-largest city and an important gateway to the country’s rich history and natural beauty. Known as the “Capital of the North,” Francistown blends gold-rush heritage, cultural diversity, and a relaxed urban atmosphere. Whether you are curious about history, local life, or nearby wildlife experiences, this welcoming city offers an authentic taste of Botswana.

Begin your journey at the fascinating Supa Ngwao Museum, one of the city’s most important cultural landmarks. Here, you can learn about the early gold mining era, traditional crafts, and the diverse communities that shaped Francistown. Moreover, the museum provides a clear and engaging introduction to the region’s past and present.

Next, explore the lively streets of the city center, where modern shops sit alongside traditional markets. As you walk around, you will notice the friendly rhythm of daily life and the mix of cultures that define Francistown. Furthermore, local vendors offer handmade goods, fresh produce, and small bites that are perfect for a quick taste of Botswana.

For a peaceful break, head to the green spaces around Francistown, such as the banks of the Tati River. Although seasonal, the river area is ideal for quiet walks and moments of reflection. Additionally, it offers a refreshing contrast to the busy city streets and a chance to enjoy Botswana’s natural landscape.

History lovers should also take time to discover the old mining areas near Francistown. These sites tell the story of how gold transformed the region in the late 19th century. Moreover, learning about this era helps you understand why the city became one of Botswana’s key economic centers.

Food in Francistown is simple, hearty, and full of local flavor. Try traditional dishes such as seswaa, a slow-cooked meat dish, often served with pap or samp. In addition, the city has a growing number of cafés and restaurants offering international options, making it easy to find something for every taste.

If you enjoy day trips, Francistown is a great base for exploring nearby attractions. The Tati Game Reserve, located just outside the city, offers opportunities to see wildlife such as antelope, giraffes, and birdlife.
