Formerly Saigon, Ho Chi Minh is a vibrant city filled with motorbikes. Certainly not an easy city to drive in and renting a car is not recommended. Best to hire a driver.
Parks come alive in the morning as workers attend their morning fitness classes before going to work. Go to the Botanic Garden and Zoo at 7.30 am and you will see what I mean.
The place to be is definitely in District 1. It is the home of the major buildings such as the Notre Dame Cathedral, the Post Office and the Opera House. The War Remnants Museum is a must see and reflects the horror and futility of past wars. For a more in depth insight into this, you can always take the Chu Chi Tunnel Tours.
There are shows to be seen as well. The A O Show is well recommended and so are the Water Puppet Theatres.
Don’t think that Vietnam is behind the trends. With department stores such as the Parkson Mall, top brand name shops and a shopping centre called the Vincom Centre, your shopping addiction can be satisfied. But you don’t have to go far to go shopping.
Moreover the Ben Thanh market will tax your bargaining skills and is renowned for their persistent sellers. There are also many street vendors that will try to sell you their wares from motorbike helmets to cut out cards.
Furthermore there are all types of restaurants available and at all prices. Go local for spicy beef noodle soup or fine dining at a French restaurant such as La Villa French Restaurant. Cruise dining is also possible on the Saigon River.
Hi Chi Minh is a vibrant city full of surprises catching up with the latest shopping trends and many interesting tourist attractions, but throttled by a huge traffic problem. You cross the road at your own risk. Dynamic, bustling, historic, beautiful and charming.
