What to do in Meknes, Morocco

what to do in Meknes

A common attraction everyone visits when roaming in Meknes is Volubilis. Of course, this is one of the top attractions that takes you back to Morroco’s Roman-era but is that all? If you don’t stop from there you will be lucky enough to explore a whole lot more!

Being one of the imperial cities of Morocco, the experience it offers is more unique than Marrakesh and Fes. So, if you already based yourself in Fes, you may find the Meknes to be more bustle-free and easygoing. The train network between the two cities will allow you to make day trips without hassle. Let’s look at some of the greatest attractions before you plan your trip.

  1. Top Things to Do in Meknes: Roman ruins of Volubilis

Approximately 29 kilometers through the countryside of Meknes, the surviving temple fragments and the columns of Volubilis sit atop a hill. The remnants are sure to resemble a magnificent and powerful Roman era. The gorgeous floor mosaics of what remains of luxurious Roman villas are the telltale signs of wealthy Roman life. Among these, the House of the Athlete, House of Orpheus, and the House of labors of Hercules are the most interesting and well-preserved mosaics.

  2. What to See in Meknes: The gate of Bab al-Mansour

This magnificent architectural structure is the gateway between the city of Meknes and other city districts. According to the architectural experts, this is the finest survival gateway of North Africa. The stone carving work and use of zellige tiling are certainly lavishing. This structure was built by Sultan Moulay Ismail back in 1732. However, the gateway is a monument and there are other smaller gates used to enter and exit the cities.

  3. The old town of Meknes

Yet another bustling environment with narrow lanes filled with souks for local shopping. With plenty of Moroccan crafts, clothing, and textiles stalls, this can be a great hunting ground for such enthusiasts. The place is known to offer more attractive prices than Marrakesh. For easy navigation remember the 12th century Grand Mosque that lies in the center of the old city.

  4. The imperial city district

As Meknes was once Morocco’s great capital the imperial city district offers plenty of ancient ruins. Many visitors come here to see the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail. However, if you spend more time you can also visit the Koubat Al Khayatine, the old ambassador building of the city. Also, Dar el-Kebir, the ruined 17th-century palace of Moulay Ismail is situated next to the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail.

Remember, Meknes does not offer a range of accommodation options so, luxury can be hard to find. Many traditional Moroccan houses offer guests houses with standard services, probably the best you could find in this area.
