Highlights of Iztaccihuatl
Welcome to Iztaccíhuatl, one of Mexico’s most majestic and legendary volcanoes. Rising between Mexico City and Puebla, Iztaccíhuatl is the country’s third-highest peak and is deeply rooted in ancient Aztec mythology. Often called “La Mujer Dormida” (The Sleeping Woman), its snow-capped silhouette is both powerful and poetic.
Iztaccíhuatl is part of the Izta–Popo Zoquiapan National Park, sharing the landscape with the active Popocatépetl volcano. The mountain’s ridges resemble the shape of a reclining woman, with sections named the head, chest, knees, and feet. Moreover, this unique formation makes it one of the most recognizable natural landmarks in central Mexico.
For outdoor enthusiasts, Iztaccíhuatl offers some of the most rewarding high-altitude hiking and mountaineering experiences in the country. Trails lead through pine forests, alpine meadows, and rocky slopes, gradually opening up to dramatic views of the surrounding valleys and volcanoes.
