Highlights of Kalocsa
Kalocsa is a historic town in southern Hungary, located near the eastern bank of the Danube River. Although relatively small in size, it holds great cultural and religious importance in Hungarian history. The town is especially famous for its rich ecclesiastical heritage, vibrant folk traditions, and world-renowned paprika production.
The spiritual heart of Kalocsa is the magnificent Kalocsa Cathedral (Cathedral of the Assumption), one of Hungary’s most important Roman Catholic churches. As the seat of the Archdiocese of Kalocsa–Kecskemét, the cathedral has played a central role in the country’s Christian history for over a thousand years.
Its impressive Baroque architecture, twin towers, and ornate interior reflect centuries of religious influence. Adjacent to the cathedral stands the Archbishop’s Palace, a grand complex that houses a valuable ecclesiastical library and religious art collections.
