Rio earns its nickname ‘Cidade Maravilhosa‘ (Marvellous City) with good reason. Its eccentric appeal echoes through every street, creating a metropolitan paradise soaked in color and culture. Furthermore, the gorgeous coastline stretches on famously, highlighted by Barry Manilow’s favorite, Copacabana Beach.

Rio’s Christ the Redeemer statue stands as Brazil’s most iconic landmark and one of the world’s seven new wonders. The Art Deco statue of Jesus Christ reaches 38 meters tall, with arms spreading 28 meters wide. It gazes out over the city from the peak of Mount CorcovadoHunchback Mountain – and claimed its proud place there in 1931. Visitors have three options to reach the top: riding a train through the forest, hiking, or taking a guided vehicle transfer.

Favelas

In Rio, over a thousand favelas, or slum regions, shelter more than a quarter of the population. Residents have called them home since the 19th century. Former African slaves and their descendants created the music known as samba within these favelas. Moreover, the majority of the city’s famed samba schools that compete in the yearly carnival – such as Mangueira, Salgueiro, and Unidos da Tijuca – base themselves in or near favelas.Explore favela tours at TripAdvisor – Rio de Janeiro Activities

The Beaches – Golden Sands in Rio de Janeiro

The beaches

The beaches

Rio’s beaches rank among the greatest in the world, with unending carpets of golden sand. The warm, deep blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean draw hundreds of swimmers, surfers, and sunbathers. Caipirinhas, Mojitos, and Cervejas help cool you down in the sweltering heat. Although Copacabana long overshadowed Ipanema Beach, Ipanema earns fame for its breathtaking sunsets. In the late afternoon, crowds gather as the sun drops behind Dois Irmãos and the sky turns warm orange and pink. The colors reflect into the emerald water below. As the sun disappears, the crowd erupts into a standing ovation.

In quest of those halcyon days, sunbathers travel to its warm seas and 4km stretch of light-drenched beach. They soak up the ambiance of the promenade, known for its black and white mosaic tiles. These tiles lead to numerous restaurants and cafés nearby.
