Highlights of Ivory Coast

Ivory Coast

From the soaring grass covered mountains of Mount Nimba in the north to the lagoons and Atlantic sea of the south. The mist covered rainforests where chimps live in the west to the sweeping plantations of cocoa and plantains in the east. The Ivory Coast represents a remarkable example of West Africa.

Adjame

Adjame is one of the communes of Abidjan, Ivory Coast. The name Adjame means “a junction” or “the centre” in the local language of Tchaman. With more than four million people calling it home. It’s the second-largest metropolis in West Africa. Although not officially the capital of Ivory Coast (that honour goes to Yamoussoukro), it’s perhaps the better city to visit for an introduction into this beautiful nation.

You can wander the streets of the buzzing central Plateau district. See the Francophone spires of St. Paul’s Cathedral or visit the National Museum. Wonder down Princess Road, try the traditional local cassava curries on the street corners. Actually, the list goes on!

Tai National Park

The vast reserves of the Taï National Park is 3,000 square kilometres. Therefore making it one of the greatest protected areas of the Upper Guinean rainforests. Once the dominant habitat of West Africa, ranging from Gabon all the way to Senegal. The National Park consists of river valleys, woods, mountains and rolling savannah. Wildlife includes the endangered pygmy hippopotamus, swinging olive colobus monkeys, duikers and chimpanzees.

The Capital City

A visit to Yamoussoukro is a remarkable experience. Wide boulevards and grand open spaces, brand new governmental buildings and high rise hotels. It has only been the capital of Ivory Coast since 1983.

There are some interesting sights, and not least of all that colossal Basilica of Our Lady of Peace. This is the largest Christian church on the planet and a mass of domes and columns that reflects the grandeur of Rome itself.
