Local Dancers in Gaborone
Gaborone is the capital of Botswana. The population is less than a quarter of a million.
Its Gaborone Game Reserve shelters wildebeest, impala and migratory birds. It offers picnic areas, observatory hides and a visitor centre. Go south west of the capital and you will find the much appreciated Mokolodi Nature Reserve. Larger in size and bigger in animals, rhinos and giraffes inhabit this reserve. Thereby safaris are often offered here. Most tourists that come to Botswana want the experience of a safari, and Gaborone is often used as the hub for this activity.
The king of all safaris though is the Okavango Delta. Found in northern Botswana, its a vast inland delta that gets flooded on a seasonal basis. Consequently the lush habitat that grows offers a whole range of animals food and habitat. This too attracts the predators. From October to December, it is particularly hot. This overlaps with the wet season from November to March. Note during the wet season some roads become impassable. May to August experiences cool nights with warm days. Then the drier months from July to October experience floodings from June to August. Peak season is July to October.
Kgale Hill or “the Sleeping Giant” looks down on the city. The past home for a television repeater, it is now a major tourist attraction. At 1,287 metres above sea level it offers views over the city for those who wish to climb it.
In the central business district you can see the Three Dikgosi Monument. “Dikgosi” means tribal leaders. These individuals played an important role in gaining Botswana’s independence. In addition to being the most visited site in Gaborone it is also a place for events. One such event is the Miss Independence Botswana pageant.
Go to the Iskcon temple in the centre of Gaborone. A hindu temple devoted to various deities. They do a vegetarian brunch on Sundays. There is a south Indian temple too. This is called Sri Balaji Temple designed by a tamil from South India. The then president inaugurated this temple in 2007.
For those following the Christian faith there are numerous churches. Christ the King Cathedral has parishioners that are apparently very welcoming. Alternatively try the spiritually fulfilling Trinity Church.
Other options may include visiting the River Walk Mall. Similar to most malls around the world there are shops, dining options and a movie theatre. You could also go to the National Museum though many visitors have commented that it needs an update. However more impressive is a trip to Gaborone Dam where you can visit the yacht club.
