Highlights of Agra
Agra is a historic city in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It lies on the banks of the Yamuna River and ranks among India’s most visited destinations. Most importantly, Agra is world-famous for the Taj Mahal, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Because of this monument, millions of tourists travel to the city every year.
Historically, Agra gained prominence during the Mughal era. In the 16th century, Emperor Babur established Mughal rule here. Later, Emperor Akbar expanded and strengthened the city by constructing grand buildings and administrative centers. As a result, Agra became a major political and cultural hub in northern India.
The Taj Mahal remains the city’s most iconic landmark. Emperor Shah Jahan built this white marble mausoleum in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal. Completed in 1653, it features symmetrical gardens, intricate carvings, and precious stone inlay work. Moreover, the monument changes color throughout the day, which enhances its charm at sunrise and sunset.
In addition, the Agra Fort stands as another UNESCO World Heritage Site. Builders constructed this massive red sandstone fortress under Emperor Akbar. Inside, visitors can explore palaces, courtyards, and mosques that display Mughal architectural brilliance. Similarly, the nearby Tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah, often called the “Baby Taj,” showcases delicate marble craftsmanship.
