Highlights of Bergen
Bergen with a population of nearly 290,000 is the second-largest city in Norway. It is situated on the west coast in a peninsular called Bergenshalvoyen. Surrounded by seven majestic mountains, it is the ideal place to start your journey to discover the Norwegian fjords. With its proximity to the Northern sea, it is no surprise that the major industries related to Bergen include shipping, aquaculture and the offshore petroleum industry.
King Olav Kyrre officially founded Bergen in 1070. As such it was Norway’s capital in the 13th century, with trading from its natural port. UNESCO has recognised the importance of its historical value claiming the historic Bryggen quayside as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The wooden buildings bear witness to the city’s rich medieval past. In particular St.Mary’s Church and Bergenhus Fortress are part of its historical landmarks.
In addition to its waterfront, Bergen has parks for that outside fresh air experience. The Bergen Botanical Garden itself has a wonderful selection of plants species. And Nygardsparken is a beautiful natural park which boasts walking paths amongst ponds, offering possibilities for outdoor exercise.
Moreover if you are seeking views, take the funicular ride up Mount Floyen to see the panoramic view of Bergen below.
Bergen is not all outdoors though. It has a cultural side nestled in its museums and art galleries. For example the Bergen Museum houses artifacts of its cultural history. For art, try the KODE Art Museums or Composer Homes which features works by Edvard Munch and other prominent Norwegian artists. Whereas if you seek a look into the trading heritage, look no further than The Hanseatic Museum, a well preserved converted merchant’s house.
The Norwegian Fjords
If you come to Bergen, you will no doubt want to explore the Norwegian Fjords. Breath-taking scenery can be viewed by cruise boat or by car. At the same time take in the local cuisine, which is much more than salmon on a smorgasbord. Also visit neighbouring enchanting villages such as Flam and the Hardangerfjord.
A beautiful world of discovery as highlighted by its past culture in the Viking Ship Museum. And it has to be said that no visit would be complete without a visit to the Norwegian Maritime. A living testimony to showcase Norwegian’s past strength in the sea world.
