Juan Carlos

Juan Carlos is an environmental management specialist. He loves to be in contact with nature and animals whenever possible. He has worked mostly as a teacher which is strange considering that he was very shy when he was younger. However that constant challenge of being in front of an audience forced him to overcome his timid ways. In his free time he also works as a guide showing the highlights of Bogota, especially its huge gay district. He says, “I adore this city!” Interested in the environment, sociology, politics, history, economics and travelling, he thoroughly enjoys having a long and philosophical exchange of ideas. His hobbies include hiking, reading, arts, kayaking, going to museums and exploring his city. A confessed foodie, he loves trying new food. Even the strangest of foods such as snake and beetle larvae, which he had in the Amazon. If you are looking for an intellectual fun guy with his heart attached to the earth, then let Juan Carlos be your guide.

Juan Carlos was most accommodating. I admit, I was a bit of a difficult customer and changed the start time of the tour at the last minute. He happily agreed to meet me at the new time. I found him to be a wealth of knowledge about the city of Bogota and his tour was both informative and entertaining. He even remained available via text when I needed information on dining and drinking.” – Richard, USA

The time that we spent with Jonathan was magical. He is completely professional, he listened and tailored our program to meet our needs, and he has a delightful personality. Simply the best.” – Bill, USA

A group of four of us were visiting Bogota from the U.S. for the first time. As a point of contact, I reached out to Holiday Houseboys and arranged a half-a-day private tour in Bogota with Jonathan. I shared with him that we are interested in history, politics, culture, and food. Days before our arrival, Jonathan reached out to me via WhatsApp and phone call to discuss our itinerary. He even offered to make hotel transfer arrangement for when we arrive in Bogota.

On the day of our tour, Jonathan arrived at our hotel right on time. We began the tour with a brief history of Colombia at the Plaza de Nunez. Considered that we only had half a day, he managed to show us quite a few interesting places including the Botero Museum, a local juicer in a market for exotic tropical food and juice tasting, and the colorful La Concordia district. We went to a restaurant for a delicious traditional Colombian meal and we took a short coffee and dessert break at an artisanal cafe. We concluded the day with a surprise activity that Jonathan had arranged for us. He took us to a local pub to play a few rounds of Tejo, a Columbian national sports! We had such a wonderful time.

Travelling, solo from Australia, I came across this website …..best thing I could had done !!

Jonathan, organised the day and sights which proved to be the all important ones for a quick visit, along with this, he was very organised in timing to avoid the crowds which was great .
Personally, with Jonathan I felt relaxed immediately and I felt extremely safe, comfortable, his English was perfect and his knowledge was impeccable, and was his persona ( so much so, I booked him for a second tour).

Cannot rate the holiday houseboy idea enough ……. Best time/ tour I have done for many years .

And for Jonathan a very easy ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ stars !” – Murray, Australia

Above all, Jonathan is kind, polite, and patient. He is eager to share his knowledge and the culture of his country. We thoroughly enjoyed our half-day tour with him. It was a very memorable way to experience Bogota.” – Andrew, USA

Highlights of Bogota

Bogota

Bogota

Bogota is a sprawling city of the Andes in Colombia 2640 metres (8660 feet) above sea-level. That is the 3rd highest capital in South America after Quito in Ecuador and La Paz in Bolivia. Moreover it was also named Santa Fe de Bogota between 1991 and 2000, but thankfully nowadays they drop the Santa Fe.

This Colombian capital  has struggled from a poor image of being a dangerous city. Fortunately through a system of community watches “Comunidad Segura” implemented since 1995, it is much much safer than it used to be. Indeed it is now a bit of a party town with many clubs and bars for all tastes.

Notably one of the most famous museums is Museo Del Oro (Gold Museum). Housing collections from the pre-Hispanic era, it is a must see. It dates back to 1939 and is a testimony to Colombia’s rise in the gold art sector. The exhibition was completely renovated in 2008.

Colombia also boasts the painter and sculptor Fernando Botero whose figures tend to be in large proportions. Not only the men but especially the women. Visit Museo Botero del Banco de la Republica to visit works of his art. So famous are his distinctive sculptures that you may bump into one in other parts of the world, for example outside Barajas airport in Madrid.

The Spanish have also left their imprint. Apart from their language check out the architecture in Barrio La Candelaria. Albeit other attractions include Plaza de Bolivar and Museo de la Independencia Casa del Florero. In addition there is Capitolio Nacional.

A trip to Bogota would not be complete without visiting one of its markets. For this try Plaza de Mercado de Paloquemao for its local produce. The flower market is also spectacular. Additionally you have flea markets. Such as Mercado de las Pulgas de Usaquen and Mercado de las Pulgas de San Alejo. However if it is crafts that you are after, then do not give Pasaje Rivas a miss.

To fully make the most out of your holiday in Bogota, then contact one of our Holiday Houseboys. Your local  gay friendly guide who will look after your safety and welfare at all times.
