Highlights of Chisinau, Moldova
Chisinau is the capital of Moldova. Part of the former Eastern block, many of its buildings have that Soviet era look about them. However let us say its lack of tourism make it an authentic and charming place to visit. With a total population of 3.55 in Moldova, just under a fifth live in Chisinau.
Nestled in between the Ukraine and Romania, Moldova has gained fame in the wine sector. The region of Nistreana for example is famous for reds. Moreover Codru has some of the largest wine cellars in the area. In Chisinau you can also visit wine cellars. With Milestii Mici being the deepest wine cellar in the world, the activity of wine tasting of course is a must. Try ending with a sweet white dessert wine called “Margaritar”. It comes highly recommended.
Chisinau is home to the country’s administrative and commercial centre. So it is pleasant to find some of the open places to escape the hustle and bustle of the city.
The top tourist attraction in Chisinau is the Dendrarium Park. In spring the blooming flowers are beautiful, and in autumn you have the splendor of the changing colours of the leaves. There is also a small pond with water lilies. A great place to relax and unwind as you stroll along its footpaths.
Stefan cel Mare Park is also a hit with tourists and locals alike. Centred in the hub of the city, you can visit a monument dedicated to Alexander Pushkin, the Alley of the Classics and a monument of Stefan the Great after whom the park is named. A popular meeting place is the water fountain in the park. With over 100 benches around the park there is ample space for sitting down . And plenty of restaurants and bars too. Another park worth visiting may be the Valea Morilor.
Close by to Stefan cel Mare Park is the Triumphal Arch. Built to commemorate the Russian victory over the Ottoman empire, it stands across government buildings. With the national flag waving in the wind it is a popular photo shoot for tourists. After all it is very much a national symbol.
The Victory Memorial and Eternal Flame is a memorial to the soldiers who died in World War II. Set in pleasant grounds, the armed guards add to the atmosphere of the place. However to understand the history of Moldova, visit the Muzeul National de Istorie a Moldovei. The National History Museum of Moldova. Another popular museum you may wish to visit is the National Museum of Ethnography and Natural History. This is a natural history museum with oriental style architecture. Opened in late 19th century, in addition to seeing stuffed animals there is a section on Moldovan costumes.
The Nativity Cathedral, Catedrala Nasterea Domnului, is an Orthodox Church. Originally built in 1830 its adjoining bell tower was destroyed by the Communists after World War II. Then rebuilt in 1997 in a simple style, harmonious to the style of the cathedral. The inside though is more impressive than the exterior. It has a pretty dome and plenty of colourful mosaics. Being the main church in the area, it gets filled with local people during service times especially at weekends.
For religious art a good choice is St. Theodor Tiron Convent. However if you wish to see more contemporary pieces, then head to the National Museum of Moldovan Art.
