Darjeeling
Located 2 hours north of Siliguri is the famous city of Darjeeling. It is located in the Lesser Himalayas at an elevation of 2,000 metres. Obviously as the name suggests, it is well known for its tea plantations. In addition, it has incredible views of the world’s third-highest mountain, Kangchenjunga, and the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Darjeeling Himalayan Railway
In 1878, Franklin Prestage of the Eastern Bengal Railway, had a vision to build a rail link between the hills of Darjeeling and the plains. He pointed out how a railway could substantially reduce the cost of transporting tea and rice.
It is about 88 km and climbs from about 100 metres above sea level at New Jalpaiguri to about 2,200 metres at Darjeeling.
Six diesel locomotives handle most of the service, with daily tourist trains from Darjeeling to Ghum, which is India’s highest railway.
World Heritage Status
UNESCO world Heritage Committee added the DHR as a world Heritage site in 1999 stating the following reasons:
An outstanding example of an innovative transportation system which serves as a model for similar developments in many parts of the world. The development of railways in the 19th century had a profound influence on many parts of the world.
The DHR is famous for many reasons such as being a gateway to the spectacular Himalayas.
Kangchenjunga
The Kangchenjunga is a mountain in the Himalaya range. It is one of the 14 mountains that are more than 8,000 metres above sea level. With an elevation of 8,586 m. Kangchenjunga is the third highest, after Mount Everest (8,850 m) and K2 (8,611 m).
The Kangchenjunga has five peaks. Since the first ascent in 1955, only 243 climbers have reached the top of Kangchenjunga, while during the same time 4,500 persons reached the top of Everest.
