Highlights of Natal
Natal is the capital of the state of Rio Grande do Norte in north eastern Brazil. With a population of approximately 900,000 people it is he 19th largest city in Brazil. As such with its beach as the main attraction it is a major tourist destination. Apart from that it is a major exporter of tropic fruits such as melon, sugar apple and papaya. In addition Natal also exports crustaceans and carnauba wax.
The Greater Natal International Airport connects Natal with a network of Brazilian cities and some international flights.
Natal is so named because the Portuguese Explorer Amerigo Vespucci founded the city on the saint’s day of the same name in 1501. However no Europeans settled in the area for decades. Leaving the local tribe the Potiguara tribe in peace.
French pirates began trading with the locals until they were finally expelled by the Portuguese in 1597. In order to protect the town, construction began on the Fort of the Holy Kings (“Forte dos Santos Reis“). Also known as the Magi-Kings (“Forte dos Reis Magos“).
The Portuguese officially named the town Natal in 1599. Natal in Portuguese means “nativity” or “Christmas”. However the Portuguese lost control to the Dutch in 1633 to 1654. Consequently the Dutch called the fort “Fort Ceulen” after one of their commanders. That was until the Portuguese took back the city.
The Popularity of Carne de Sol (Beef Jerky)
Natal itself did not grow sugar cane because its soil was too sandy. Instead the town relied upon the development of cattle farming in its interior. The meat was dried and known as “carne de sol“. Beef jerky.
Additionally, especially in the last century, the development of salt and petroleum have brought in much investment.
Because of Natal’s easterly location, an American army base was set up in a suburb of Natal named Parnamirims. Interestingly Brazil was the only South American country to enter World War II. The Memorial Natal is a history museum in Avenida Prefeito Omar O’Grady which may be worth while visiting.
