Highlights of Hamburg

Hamburg is a major port city in northern Germany. At its centre is the Alster lake which is dotted with boats and surrounded by cafes. The city is connected to the North Sea by the Elbe River. It’s crossed by hundreds of canals, and also contains large areas of parkland.

Hamburg is a great destination and is very much worth a visit. For Hamburg, we would recommend you have at least 2 days. It’s the second largest city in Germany and the biggest port city in Germany. Therefore, we suggest you visit the port.

Port of Hamburg

The Port of Hamburg was an important  trading centre between Flanders and Russia. Also it played an important role in protecting the Elbe trade routes by obtaining lands along the river’s branches. Over time, it gained control of the river’s use and was recognised by the emperor for its special role.

When to visit

The peak travel months are April to August, plus October and December. Summer months (June to August) can be sunny, foggy or rainy. Winter (December through to February) can be snowy. Key events are the Hamburg Port Anniversary (May), the Alster Fair (late summer), the Reeperbahn Music Festival (September) and the Christmas Markets (November and December). Hamburg’s traditional, early-morning fish market attracts crowds with local food.
