Learn about the Berlin Wall’s history
The East Side Gallery is the Berlin Wall’s longest remaining portion. More than 100 artists from more than 20 nations painted this section of the border wall with their creations in 1990. Likely, the most famous painting is “Fraternal Kiss”. It depicts a kiss between Russian leader Leonid Brezhnev and East Germany’s SED Party Chairman Erich Honecker.
Get up close to a piece of history at the Memorial of the Berlin Wall
This 1998 open-air display explains the separation of the country and city which lasted for over three decades. The memorial includes a 60-meter-long (200-foot-long) section of the original Berlin Wall, as well as the ruins of various border facilities and escape tunnels. Many papers explaining how the wall was built in the 1960s and demolished in 1989 are available at the visitors’ center. Climb to the observation tower of the neighboring documentation center for a panoramic view of the memorial gardens.
