Jaipur is the capital as well as the largest city of the Indian state of Rajasthan. This city has a population of 3.1 million. It is the tenth most populated city in the country. Jaipur is also known as the Pink City, due to the dominant colour theme of its buildings. It is some 268 kms (167 miles) southwest of New Delhi.
The Rajput ruler Jai Singh II, the ruler of Amer, founded Jaipur in 1727. Indeed it is one of the earliest modernised cities of India, designed by Vidyadhar Bhattacharya. During the British Colonial era, the city served as the capital of Jaipur State. Having gained its independence in 1947, Jaipur became capital of the newly-formed state of Rajasthan. Nevertheless Jaipur is considered one of most socially rich legacy urban areas of India.
One of the remarkable landmarks in Jaipur is the Jal Mahal. It means “Water Palace”. A beautiful palace which is located in the middle of Man Sagar Lake in Jaipur city. Maharaja Jai Singh II of Amber was responsible for its construction in the 18th century.
There are several Birla Mandirs located all around the country. A Birla Mandir is a type of Hindi temple. And you can find one in Jaipur. The Grand Temple is located on an elevated floor at the base of Moti Dungri Hill in Rajasthan. The temple is sometimes called the Laxmi Narayan Temple.
Visit the Museum of the Gem and Jewellery Federation in Chamber Bhawan, MI Road. Here you can see amazing collection of gems, jewellery, raw stones and rocks. This museum is very near to the famous Albert Hall. It dazzling displays will fascinate you.
The Albert Hall is the oldest museum of the city and functions as the state museum of Rajasthan. You can find it in Ram Niwas garden on the outskirts of the city wall opposite New Gate. This building is a fine example of Indo-Saracenic architecture. Its other name is the Government Central Museum.
