London is the capital of England with emblemic buildings such as Big Ben, Buckingham Palace and the Houses of Parliament. With history going back to Roman times, London has developed into a world financial centre. Located on the River Thames, London is undoubtedly the place to be when it comes to British art, culture and history.

Another of the iconic buildings is the Tower of London. Housing the Crown Jewels, Beefeaters defend the site in their outlandish costumes. Also used as a prison it was where Sir Walter Raleigh spent some time as punishment for secretly marrying one of Queen Elizabeth’s ladies-in-waiting without the Queen’s permission. Sir Walter Raleigh was responsible for helping to colonise North America specifically Virginia, and for bringing back such commodities as tobacco. One oddity is that you can get to see hundred year old graffiti.

Close by is Tower Bridge. There is a Tower Bridge Exhibition. You can learn about Victorian engineering used to raise and lower the Bridge. In addition you can get to walk along high-level walkways which offer panoramic views across London.

Made popular by such films as “The Darkest Hour”, one interesting trip is to go and see the Churchill War Rooms in King Charles Street . This is where Churchill and his war cabinet lived and planned their World War II strategy to defeat the Germans.

Westminster Abbey is yet another iconic building of London. It is one of the most important gothic buildings in England, whose construction was under the authority of Henry III in 1245. Prior to this the site was the home of Benedictine monks. Following its status as a coronation church since 1066, it is the resting place of 17 kings and queens of England. Nowadays you can get to explore its treasury of books, textiles and paintings, amongst other artifacts. The triforium opened additionally in June 2018, the year of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. A Christmas carol service during the festive season is said to be inspirational and not to be missed. Two famous events that took place here include the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer and Sir Winston Churchill’s state funeral. Open to the public of all religions, you can visit the Stone and Golden Galleries on level 5. Though a long climb, it is yet another opportunity to get a panoramic view of London. Talking of views, the London Eye built to celebrate the Millennium offers outstanding London views. Standing 135 metres high it is Europe’s tallest cantilevered observation wheel.

When it comes to art, London is at the forefront. The National Gallery houses paintings from the 13th to the 19th century from British and other European painters. Also has some good cafes. Then there is the British Museum which describes itself as “of the world for the world”. Also free of charge. Objects of particular interest are the Parthenon sculptures, Egyptian mummies and the Rosetta Stone. But then don’t forget to visit the Victoria & Albert Museum. Termed the “world’s greatest museum of art and design”. And if you still have time in your schedule there is the Natural History Museum. With many interactive exhibits, this museum helps you discover the natural world in which we live. Included here are exhibits such as the wildlife garden, the Life and Earth Galleries as well as geological collections. Educational and thrilling.

If you want to see British produce at its best, then visit Borough Market. Dating back to the 13th Century this is an amazing food market. Other markets you may enjoy include Covent Garden and Camden Market, the latter being a hippy trend setter place.

However London is not all historic buildings, there are some green open spaces much adored by tourists and locals alike. For example visit Hyde Park, St. James’s Park or Regent’s Park, to get some exercise and decide what to see next.
