Lusaka itself is located central south of the elongated country, and is the centre of commerce and government in Zambia. The official language is English but there are two main African languages too. These are Nyanja and Bemba.

Highways head out to the north, east, south and west to reach other parts of the country.

The city was founded in 1905 as it came under the British Protectorate of North Rhodesia. The city’s name comes from a local chief called Lusaaka.

When coming to Lusaka, one of the many activities to do is to go on safari. You can even go on motorbike tours, as well as the usual 4WD tours. Seeing the “big five” of lion, rhino, elephant, buffalo and leopard being the most sought after tour for the adventurous. There is a nearby Lusaka National Park but check what animals are there. Others include the Chaminuka Game Reserve noted for its cheetah walk, or even canoeing in the Lower Zambesi National Park. The Kalimba Reptile Park may also catch your attention.

When it comes to within Lusaka, you could also go shopping high end at the Eastpark Mall, visit the Arcades Shopping Mall or go more native at the Sunday Crafts Market. There is also another market on Sundays called the Pakati Sunday Market.

Other things to do include a museum trip to the Zambia National Museum, visit an interesting gallery called the 37D Gallery or take a local cooking lesson.
