Highlights of Eswatini
Bordering Mozambique, in the southeast of Africa. You will find the lush and mountainous Kingdom of Swaziland, now officially called Eswatini. This small but beautiful country of emerald peaks, rivers, and waterfalls is a hiker’s paradise. Nature reserves are the top attraction and even though only a few of them host the Big Five ie: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino.
The Hlane Game Sanctuary
The Hlane Game Sanctuary is home to the largest herds of wild animals in the country. It is one of the few places in Eswatini where visitors have a chance of seeing lion, rhino and even elephants. Twitchers will also be happy at this 22,000 hectare reserve which has a diverse collection of species, including white backed vultures.
Visitors must take a guided game drive if they want to see lions. As these reside in a separate enclosure, but self-guided drives are permitted in other areas of the park. In addition to wildlife watching, things to do include guided mountain biking, cultural visits to a nearby Swazi village and birding walks.
Highlights of Mbabane
Mbabane (pronounced Um-ba-ba-neh) is Eswatini’s capital city and has a beautiful location, ringed by the backdrop of the Dlangeni Hills. With an average height of 1243m, it’s temperate climate offers some relief during the hot season. Mbabane is only a small city with a population of 95,000.
The town developed during colonial times and became the new British colonial capital in 1903. Development saw the first post office and the arrival of electricity. Afterwards, a golf course, tennis courts, cricket pitch and theatre club soon followed.
It wasn’t until independence in 1968 that Mbabane really began to expand. This lead to the building of the Swazi Plaza and the Mbabane Mall. Today, this area forms the heart of the city and has banks, shops, cafés and most modern visitor amenities. Hotels are located mostly in the surrounding suburbs and hills.
In addition to lots of places to eat ranging from restaurants serving international cuisine to coffee shops and fast food joints. Despite now being a fully modern city, Mbabane has a pleasantly relaxed feel to it which must be seen.
