From the start David was communicative and on time (early, actually) for the several excursions that I arranged with him. He’s an old soul who can relate to people of all ages, speaks several languages besides English, and has lived all over Colombia. I knew after our first meeting that I could call on him if I were ever in a tight spot, which was also a comfort being alone in Medellin for a month.” – Erik, USA

Highlights of Medellin

Medellin

Due to its temperate weather, Medellin is known as the City of Eternal Spring. Indeed it has a famous annual flower festival.

It is the birthplace of Fernando Botero. Moreover there is a plaza named after him – Plaza Botero – containing some of his sculptures. His signature sculptures are over sized men and women with Colombian characteristics. Other plazas include Plaza Mayor and Plaza Cisneros with its light poles. As for parks, there are Parque El Poblado and Parque Angelopolis.

Whereas most cities think of the underground, this city has taken to the skies. There is a network of modern metrocables. These link surrounding barrios to the centre.  The metrocable ride is a popular tourist activity. Strange as it seem, so are the Escaleras Electricas De La Comuna 13. These are escalators. You see the colourful graffiti as you ascend, as well as getting a bird’s eye view of this majestic city.

To get an understanding of its history, visit Museo de Antioquia. Another museums of note is the Museo Casa de la Memoria. A record of its violent past and an emotional experience as some people fought back against the corruption and violence. Its conversion into a much visited city is testament to those who struggled against the drug lords. On the other hand there is also a museum dedicated to Pablo Escobar. Apparently he supplied 80% of the cocaine that entered USA in the early 1990s.

In addition other museums include El Castillo Museo y Jardines, which is a beautiful castle set amongst some amazing grounds, Cementerio Museo de San Pedro and the artist’s house Casa Museo Pedro Nel Gomez.  Similarly you can see the house of Fernando Gonzalez, a famous Colombian writer, at Casa Museo Otraparte. What strikes the visitor is not only the places themselves but their serene settings.

Albeit Medellin has many other attractions. You can do tours by segway in the city, or horseback in the country. There are even ziplines for the more adventurous. And of course there are coffee tours for Colombia produces 11.5 million bags per year. The third largest coffee producer in the world after Brazil and Vietnam.
