Some of the Highlights of Merzouga As Shown By Our Gay Friendly Tour Guide

Merzouga in the Moroccan desert

Merzouga in the Moroccan desert

For Merzouga is a Sahara Desert town in Morocco. Close to the Algerian border, only 50 kms away. It is some 560 kms to the east of Marrakesh.By car, it would take you almost 9 hours to get there. Regarded as the gateway to Erg Chebbi desert it is a town ready for desert tourism. Not surprisingly Merzouga goes under the name of a “desert theme park”. Meanwhile Erg Chebbi is “a wonderland of sand”. Despite all this, Merzouga has the largest underground water supply in Morocco.

One of the highlights in the area is the Dayet Srji salt lake. Whilst it is often dry in summer, it can attract a whole range of migratory birds during winter. These include desert warblers, Egyptian nightjars and sometimes even flamingos. Consequently it is popular with bird watchers.

Typical of most deserts, there are various activities that are ripe for tourism. One such one is exploring the desert on an ATV Quad. Roaring on the sand in a group can be fun. Four wheel drive tours are also popular. And of course going on a camel trek is a must too. A typical desert trip to Marrakesh will take three days with part of it by camel.

You can also go on excursions to explore the Berber way of life. Sleeping in tents and enjoying the outdoor cuisine are all part and parcel of such adventures. Glamping – glamour camping – is also possible.

Whilst you are not likely to find many museums in the desert, one surprising museum is the Morocco National 4×4 Auto Museum. Expect to find a few crazy cars such as two jeeps into one, as well as vintage cars.

A pleasant excursion some 7 kms south of Merzouga you can find a gallery café. It is called Galerie Laoun, in Khamlia. The sign says “Chez les artistes”. There are paintings for sale as well as a few decorative items and a small café for refreshments at the back. A delightful little oasis in itself with real espresso coffee. It is ran by a French painter and her Moroccan husband.

Get the most of your vacation in the area with a Holiday Houseboy, your private gay friendly tour guide. A local insight into where to go and what to do.
