Highlights of Mumbai

Mumbai City
In a 1991 survey, Mumbai is the most populated city in India with 12.4 million. In contract New Delhi, the capital has 11 million. Located in the state of Maharashtra on the west coast of India, it lies between Gujarat to the north and Goa to the south. It is famous for the movie industry, Bollywood, as well as a financial centre.
Originally made up of seven islands, land was reclaimed to make a larger land mass what Mumbai is today. Completed in 1845, development of roads and railways followed the reclamation project, converting Bombay to be a major player in the Arabian Sea region.
Formerly Bombay until 1995, in the Mumbai Harbour, the British Raj built the Gateway of India arch in 1924. Symbolic for the trade entering in and out of the centre, it was built to commemorate the first British monarch to visit India, King George V. However when he arrived in 1911, the construction was not complete and they used a cardboard structure for its representation. Furthermore when India gained independence in 1947, the last remaining British battalion passed through the arch on their final departure from India.
One thing you should do whilst in Mumbai is go along the Marine Drive at night. You can view some fantastic sunsets. Go for a walk, listen to music or enjoy eating at one of the many restaurants. Watch the waves crashing on the beach, and of course go people watching. Nariman Point on Marine Drive is also popular.
The Bandra-Worli Sea Link is another tourist attraction. It links Mumbai suburbs to south Mumbai. Constructed in 2009, it is an impressive structure. Six kilometres in length, this architectural marvel is fast becoming a symbol of Mumbai.
Go to Kanheri caves to explore some 4th century Buddhist caves carved into the rock. Located in the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, they are some 7 kms from the main entrance to the park so you may wish to get some local transport to get there. There are 109 caves in total. The Buddhist monastery itself is beautiful. The higher you go the more impressive the views. However beware of the thieving monkeys.
When it comes to exploring central Mumbai, don’t miss out on Prabhadevi. This startling white building is one of the most revered temples dedicated to Lord Ganesh. This is the Hindu Elephant god, the deity of wisdom and intelligence. The remover of obstacles and the patron of arts and sciences.
One of the most revered persons from Mumbai is Gandhi. Visit the Mani Bhavan Gandhi Museum to see where Ghandi once lived. This simple two storey building is dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi. It is a museum research centre and library. The focus is on Gandhi’s life and struggles for Indian independence using non-violent protests. Central to his ideology was the removal of the caste system and equality to all. His peaceful protect against the British regime was the wearing of home made spun clothe. This adoption was known as “Chantra”. For though hate was against his principles, Gandhi firmly believed that India should be free from exploitation. His viewpoint was that British were welcome as citizens but not rulers.
However remnants of the British remain, especially in architecture. For example check out the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, formerly Victoria Station. The Taj Hotel Palace is also another must see.
For some water fun try the Water Kingdom in Gorai, or Essel World in the same area. The latter being India’s largest amusement park.
Whatever you want to do, or wherever you want to do, best go with a local. Your Holiday Houseboys is your educated local gay friendly guide who can help you discover the real Mumbai.
