Highlights of Paarl
Located in the Western Cape Town province in South Africa, Paarl is a charming city steeped in natural wonders, history, and culture. In addition it has a rich tradition of winemaking. It is the third oldest European settlement in the country. Moreover it is the largest town in the Cape Winelands with a population of 191,013.
Paarl takes its name from the huge granite outcrop standing on the crest of Paarl Mountain. In 1657, Abraham Gabemma led an expedition from the Cape in search of resources. He eventually came across this giant granite rock. This particular rock is significant because it is the second-largest granite outcrop in the world.
The city of Paarl became internationally known when Nelson Mandela walked out of Drakenstein Correctional Centre ending 27 years of imprisonment. Thereafter the post-apartheid era of South Africa began.
A tour around Paarl allows you to know and appreciate the city with its surrounding countryside. One of the most important Afrikaans monuments is here. The Taal Monument was erected in 1975 on Paarl Rock to commemorate the semi centenary of Afrikaans as an official language. Hiking up to Paarl Rock is worth a visit to see the awe-inspiring scenery. Meanwhile, located on the banks of Berg River, the Afrikaanse Taal museum features contemporary exhibits on the origins of the Afrikaans language. The Gregorian-style home still holds social functions to showcase local artists.
Architecture in Paarl reflects European influences. It also has other styles including Neo-Gothic, Cape Dutch, Neoclassical, Cape Georgian, Victorian, Edwardian and Art Deco. Take a walking tour along some of the town’s best-preserved streets to admire these heritage establishments. Housed in a Cape Dutch structure, the Paarl Museum highlights historical and cultural artifacts depicting Paarl Valley’s history.
Within the Cape Winelands, Paarl is notably a popular destination. Make sure to visit the Paarl Wine Route. Take a sip of some of the world’s best tasting wines. Regarded as the second oldest in the country, this wine route is distinguished for its rich, full-bodied, spicy red and crisp white wines. The climate in the district favours the growing of Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinotage, Shiraz, Chardonnay, and Chenin Blanc.
Celebrating the Cape culture, Paarl’s Spice Route will take you on a cerebral gastronomic journey all the way from farm to table. Artisans invited to take part in the Spice Route Destination community were handpicked to offer something unique to the whole collective. Treat your palate with any of the tastings offered on the Tasting Passport.
Apart from palate-pleasing experiences, outdoor adventures are aplenty. There are towering mountains, breath-taking sceneries, rivers and streams. A day in Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve makes a perfect outdoor experience. Here you can walk, hike or take a bike trail. Take advantage of the picnic areas and river treks. Meanwhile adventure seekers can challenge their rock climbing skills on Bretagne Rock, Paarl Rock or Cascade Manor.
Lastly, you can enjoy wildlife experiences in any of the nature centres. For example Le Bonheur Crocodile Farm, Giraffe House Wildlife Awareness Centre, Drakenstein Lion Park and the Butterfly World Zoo.
