Pompei is a historic city in southern Italy. Located near Naples in the Campania region. It is world-famous for the ancient Roman city buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. Today, Pompei is one of the most important archaeological destinations in the world.

The city’s main attraction is the Archaeological Park of Pompeii. A vast UNESCO World Heritage Site that preserves streets, houses, temples, and public buildings frozen in time. Visitors can walk through ancient roads, and explore Roman villas. Furthermore they can see detailed frescoes that reveal everyday life in the Roman Empire.

Among the most significant landmarks inside the ruins are the Forum of Pompeii, the Temple of Apollo, and the impressive Pompeii Amphitheatre. The latter being one of the oldest surviving Roman amphitheaters. These sites highlight the city’s political, religious, and social importance in antiquity.

Overlooking the region is Mount Vesuvius, the volcano responsible for Pompeii’s destruction. Today, Pompei is a popular hiking destination within Vesuvius National Park. From the summit, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the Bay of Naples.

In addition to its ancient ruins, modern Pompei is home to the Shrine of the Virgin of the Rosary of Pompei, an important Catholic pilgrimage site. The basilica attracts thousands of visitors each year for religious celebrations and special occasions.

Culturally, Pompeii has inspired countless books, films, and documentaries. Seasonal exhibitions and guided tours help visitors better understand the city’s tragic history and remarkable preservation.
