Gay Accommodation in Torremolinos

Highlights of Torremolinos

Picasso Museum Malaga

Picasso Museum Malaga

With only a 10 minute train ride from Malaga airport, Torremolinos is so easy to get to. Moreover the actual train station is right in the middle of the town. It couldn’t be handier!

There is so much more to Torremolinos than sun, sand and La Nogalera, the gay area of Torremolinos. Sure the bars and clubs can be fun, but delve a little deeper into the city’s history and you can find culture through its monuments and murals, and a variety of international cuisine and shopping opportunities.

Indeed this bustling Costa del Sol resort town is more than just a pretty face. From its charming historic center to its modern marinas and adrenaline-pumping water parks, Torremolinos offers a diverse range of experiences for every type of traveler.

Change of Image

It was in 2018 when the Costa del Sol management wanted to change its image. They wanted to add in a cultural side to what was basically a line of beach resorts. And it has to be said, they have done a good job. While nearby Malaga will always have a stronger cultural hold over Torremolinos, Fuengirola to the south has its intricate beauty. For example Malaga offers the Picasso Museum, Gibralfaro with its hill top views, its port and food markets. And to the south Fuengirola offers some amazing intricate streets and an English speaking theatre. Both Malaga to the north and Fuengirola to the south are all within 30 minutes train ride from Torremolinos. Both worthy of day trips.

Not withstanding Torremolinos has its own places for you to discover.

The Beach of EL Bajondillo

No trip to Torremolinos is complete without spending some time soaking up the sun on its stunning beaches. On the one side you have Playa Bajondillo. This hosts a mini-golf park, a small amusement park, and a range of beach restaurants to cater for all palettes. Here too you will find Eton Beach with its rainbow flag, and beach beds. Around 6 pm their DJ is a big draw for an after-sun drink. Possible to get a massage here too.

Along this beach you will also be able to hire equipment for water sports. Peddlars will also be selling their wares such as cheap handbags and football T-shirts. Whilst others may offer you a hair pleating or a hanna tattoo service. Alternatively admire the sand sculptures which are in a protected area of the beach.

The Beach of La Carihuela

Go round the cliff, past the feline colony and you are then into Playa de la Carihuela. Some places here have a definite Dutch feel to them. Look out for the restaurant “Blooming”, a great healthy breakfast/brunch style restaurant serving anything from granola to lion’s mane coffee. You can find a more traditional Spanish style breakfast at the Granier chain.

In Carahuela there are statues dedicated to Salvador Dali’s muse, and another dedicated to the sailors who sadly died in a shipwreck in the treacherous storm of December 1949.

On both beaches you will find traditional chiringuitos (beach restaurants) serving up delicious paella and fresh fish. Including the famous espetos de sardinas (sardines on a stick).

The Origins of Torremolinos

Whilst the beach side definitely has the tourist feel, head uphill to explore more of the true town. First go up calle San Miguel. At the top there is La Torre Pimental, originally called Torre de los Molinos (Tower of the Windmills) from which the town gets its name. Simply put Torremolinos started off as a small fishing village with windmills.

At the top of the steps, turn left and you are at Plaza de San Miguel. Here sits the Iglesia de San Miguel (San Miguel Church) and a pleasant square. The pizzeria here in the square is exceptionally good.

El Calvario

Head up the calle San Miguel again, further past the Clock Tower and you will come to an area called “El Calvario”. It is the old town of Torremolinos. Amidst the maze of whitewashed buildings, you can discover hidden squares, and soak up the authentic Andalusian atmosphere. Look out for the small tiled water fountain. Off the main stretch of road also look out for Panaderia Francisco. Here they sell specialty breads on Thursdays. The chocolate and orange brioche is particularly tasty. Or try the honey bread if available.

Further up this street past the Town Hall you will come to the bull ring, the Sports Center and Exhibition Halls. It is in this area that you find outdoor markets on Thursdays and Sundays. If you like ceramics, then the last stall on a Thursday is a good place to buy them.

El Pasaje Begona

Back down to the Town Hall and there is Pasaje Begona. Spot the rainbow post box. In the golden era between 1962 and 1971, this small street had clubs such as the Blue Note that were frequented by the LGBTQ community. All OK until a famous raid on 24th June 1971 under Franco’s regime arrested 300 people in the bars and clubs. The foreigners were deported, and the locals thrown in jail for immoral behavior. Plaques testifying to its history tell its story.

The Murals of Torremolinos

Look upwards in the streets and you can see murals of famous people who have at one time or another visited Torremolinos. Bridget Bardot, Frank Sinatra, John Lennon and Ava Gardner are a few. For a modern look check out the colorful Bosska murals such as the “Bird of Paradise” near the Town Hall. Or “Night Metamorphis Mural” with the ladybird, a symbol of luck, by La Mariquita Club in La Nogalera.

And the Statues

In addition untold stories reveal themselves in the statues that abound its streets. You have the bull of Zeus in Plaza Europa, and many designed by Elena Laveron such as Los Oficios (the Tradesmen) and La mujer Blanca (the white lady).

In conclusion, there is so much more to Torremolinos than La Nogalera and the gay annual events that attract the LGBTQ community. Crocodile Park, The Garden Centre, shopping in Plaza Mayor and the activities of the Cultural Centre of Picasso (where the gay choir practises) are a few other options. Book a Holiday Houseboy to discover what is out there, and turn your good vacation into an exceptional one.
