Angkor: The Crown Jewel of Siem Reap’s Wonders

There’s no better way to start a trip to Siem Reap than by getting up early to tour the Angkor Archaeological Park. You can get there in 20 minutes by tuk-tuk, but you can also get there by bicycle, pedaling through vast roads backed by beautiful woodland.

The most famous temple, Angkor Wat, is the world’s biggest religious structure, occupying about one square mile. It was dedicated to Lord Vishnu and was erected as a Hindu temple by King Suryavarman II in the early 12th century. Beautiful sculptures of scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata adorn the walls within.

Angkor Thom, the massive 3.5-square-mile structure that served as the Khmer Empire’s final capital, is located near Angkor Wat.

Ta Prohm: A Jungle Wonder

Visit the Ta Prohm temple, which was featured in the 2001 film Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and is one of the most beautiful temples, with massive trees protruding out of the temple ruins.

Banteay Srei: The Pink Stone Wonder

Get off the usual path and see the Banteay Srei ruins, which are approximately an hour’s drive from Siem Reap’s city center. Banteay Srei, considered by many to be the crown gem of Angkorian art, is carved from pinkish stone and has some of the best stone sculptures anywhere on the planet.

This Hindu temple devoted to Shiva is Angkor’s art gallery, and many of its sculptures are three-dimensional.

Cambodian Landmine Museum

A 15-minute drive from the temple lies the Cambodian Landmine Museum. Aki Ra, the organization’s founder, was a child soldier during the Cambodian genocide. Exhibits exhibit landmines he destroyed, a sobering reminder of the ones that remain buried beneath Cambodia’s countryside. Disarmed grenades and unexploded aerial bombs are striking reminders of a horrible period in history.

Natural Wonders: Tonle Sap Lake

Make your way to the Tonle Sap Great Lake. The lake is located approximately 15 kilometers south of Siem Reap town. From there, take a tuk-tuk or cab to Chong Khneas village. Then, take a boat trip on the lake. Tonle Sap is the biggest freshwater lake in Cambodia. Spend the remainder of the morning at Kompong Phluk. It’s one of the lake’s largest floating communities.

visit the Angkor Night Market to see another side of Siem Reap’s nightlife. Over 250 brilliantly illuminated stores sell Khmer art, jewelry, handicrafts, silk garments, lacquerware, and more.

You may visit a silk farm in Siem Reap since Cambodian silk is well-known and a wide range of items are available. In the evening, you may go to Pub Street, which is teeming with activity. Pub Street has a variety of cuisines as well as some fantastic gelato shops.
