However after a period of decline following the rise in popularity of Fez, the royal sultans came back to enjoy Marrakesh and built splendid palaces. El Badi Palace for example although past its prime, was in its splendour during the 16th century. Under the reign of Saadian King Ahmad al-Mansur.
