Jemaa el-Fnaa Square Marrakesh
Marrakesh sometimes referred to as “Marrakech” with its French spelling is the fourth largest city in Morocco. After Casablanca, Fez and Tangier. In addition Marrakesh is one of the four imperial cities of Morocco. The others are Meknes, Fez and Rabat, Morocco’s current capital. Its population is in the region of 930,000. Moreover Marrakesh is known as the “Red City” after the red sandstone used to build its defensive wall and buildings in the 12th century. From the Berber Empire.
Without doubt one of the most famous squares in Africa is the Jemaa el-Fnaa Square in Marrakesh. Its night time activity of food stalls, merchandise and local entertainers draws in the crowds. Indeed it is the busiest square in Africa. After all it is a unique experience. It is wise to go with a guide to help you protect you from the less desirable tourist traps that may fall your way. From henna drawers, snake charmers, unscrupulous waiters, souk guides and rug sellers, they all have their subtle and less subtle ways of extracting money from the unsuspecting tourist. The Marrakesh Medina is a must visit also. Opens at 10 am, and closes at 8 pm. With a maze of alley ways you may easily get lost. But the experience will be worth it as souk sellers try to sell their ware of pottery, ceramics, leather goods, rugs, pewter ware, jewellery, clothes and trinkets. Your bargaining skills will be put to the test.
Many of the madrasas (religious schools), mosques and buildings of the 12th century bear much resemblance to the decor in Andalucia, Spain. Check out Medersa Ben Youssef, one of the old islamic schools for its courtyard and intricate tile designs. However after a period of decline following the rise in popularity of Fez, the royal sultans came back to enjoy Marrakesh and built splendid palaces. El Badi Palace for example although past its prime, was in its splendour during the 16th century. Under the reign of Saadian King Ahmad al-Mansur. The views from the terrace show the Atlas Mountains beyond the city. Take a local guide here to explain about its previous wonder. Also amongst your palace visits, perhaps you should also include the 19th century Palacio da Bahia. Visitors highly rate this palace too.
If you are looking for peace and quiet, apart from the tourists that is, then visit Jardin Majorelle. It has a classical look and feel as a result of its original design in the 1920’s. Even if you are not a fashion aficionado, many tourists rave about this museum.
Other parks to wander around include the free Cyber Parc Arsat Moulay Abdeslam and Le Jardin Secret. Andre Heller’s ANIMA Garden is also popular. Artwork with the Atlas Mountains as a backdrop.
The tallest building in the old quarter is the Koutoubia Mosque and its Minaret. At 77 metres high it can be seen from many vantage points. Only muslims can enter but at least you can enjoy the manicured gardens and the impressive building from the outside.
Albeit other attractions include the photograph museum Maison de la Photographie, and for Moroccan art try Dar Si Said Museum. Another place to visit is the Saadian Tombs. They house the remains of the former royal family. Check out the Chamber of the 12 Pillars for its Italian Carrara marble and intricate design.
