Highlights of Colombo

Colombo is a bustling cosmopolitan city, with over 5.5 million inhabitants. It also caters for high end clientele, as their hotel prices testify. The Galle Face is the beach area, and influences of British and Dutch domination can be seen around the city. Check out for example the statues in the Old Parliament gardens or the Old Dutch Hospital with its restaurants.

Typically speaking, Colombo is not a tourist destination. It is more the point of arrival and departure, but it does have a lot to offer. There is even a mental hospital turned into a high-end shopping arcade near Independence Square, the tea rooms at the old Racing Course Shopping Complex or the Gangaramaya temple, where believers walk in barefoot around the large central tree three times and sprinkle water for luck. Another must-see religious site is the Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara.

There are some high end restaurants too. Many of them are associated with five star hotels.  For example take the Tao Restaurant by the Cinnamon Grand Hotel. Alternatively Table One in the Shangri-La. However one stand out is The Ministry of Crab. Highly priced, requires advance bookings, the experience is outstanding in terms of food as well as service. And for our vegan friends there is the VOV in COlombo 6. Note Colombo is split into districts such as Colombo to Colombo 15 with Colombo 5 and 7 being the most exclusive. The business district with the World Trade Centre is Colombo 1.

For museums the top preferred site by tourists is the Colombo National Museum. It is a museum of Asian civilisations. Other museums include the Central Bank Currency Museum and the Bandaranaike Museum. Bandaranaike was the fourth Prime Minister of Ceylon, leader of the left wing Sinhala Nationalist Sri Lanka Freedom Party. He became Prime Minister in 1956 but was assassinated in 1959 by a Buddhist monk. The national airport of Sri Lanka bears the Bandaranaike name in memory of the this leader. An additional museum that might peak your interest is the Traditional Puppet Art Museum.

As for art you may want to try the Ganeshism Studio, Saskia Fernando Gallery and the Lionel Wendt Memorial Art Gallery.
