Highlights of Galle
Fishing Men on Stilts in Galle
Galle is located in the south western tip of Sri Lanka, and is the capital of the Southern province.
Its location was of major strategical importance for the trade of spices from Sri Lanka to their colonial owners. First came the Portuguese, then the Dutch and finally the British. Ceylon obtained its independence in 1948 from the British. Then came the name change to Sri Lanka.
A legacy of those bygone days, is Galle Fort. A fine remembrance of the Dutch era in the 17th century. And certainly the largest well kept fortress in Asia. It has the honour of being a World Heritage site.
Originally it was the Portuguese that first built the fort in the 16th century, but it was in the Dutch era that significant ramifications were made, and became a true fortress. In addition you can also see the Dutch influence with the 18th century Reformed Church. It was also the Dutch who built the much photographed Galle Lighthouse.
As you travel around Sri Lanka, you will also see many images of fishermen on poles. It is from this region that this image is depicted. Whilst this was a traditional method of fishing, be warned of the photographic tourist trap of “posing” fishermen on poles, looking to earn tips from gullible tourists.
In addition if there is one thing you should not miss it is the boutique shops and small restaurants to be found in the courtyard area of Galle Fort. Truly picturesque and in colonial style, you will find many mouth-watering places to whet your appetite.
