Surabaya Monument
Surabaya is the capital of East Java in Indonesia. The meaning of “Surabaya” actually comes from two Sanskit words. “Sura” means “whale”, whilst “baya” means “crocodile”. Hence the monument of the whale and the crocodile. These two animals according to legend symbolize peace and war. It is a monument that is well received by tourists for their instagram accounts!
One of the most popular things to do in Surabaya iss to visit the nearby Bromo Tengger National Park. From here you can see the Bromo Volcano. Visiting it at sunrise can be spectacular.
Another must-do for your bucket list is to visit the Sampoerna Museum, a cigarette making factory with a difference. The cigarettes are made from cloves. On the ground floor the museum goes through the history of the factory. One interesting section shows the different advertising campaigns used throughout the years. Whereas the upper floor shows you a functioning factory. Moreover it is a great place to visit because of its grandeur – an impressive colonial era building. — TEMPORARILY CLOSED —
Another such building is Majapahit, a colonnial hotel dating from 1911 that serves tea with a view of its manicured lawns.
If venturing further afield in the months of July and August, try going to the island of Madura to see their famous bull races. It is only 3 to 4 hours away, but would probably be a complete day’s trip. To get there you will be crossing one of the longest bridges in South East Asia – the Suramadu National Bridge. The bull races commemorate the rice harvest collection.
If the hustle and bust. le of the city gets a bit too much, you can find sanctuary at Taman Bungkul. This is a natural park, 900 square meters in size. There is a small entrance fee but you will be able to relax as you stroll around the gardens, away from traffic and the noise.
One unique sight is the Cheng Hoo Chinese Mosque. Whilst Indonesians are mainly muslims, many Chinese traders came to Surabaya. Check out the mosque to see how the Chinese have integrated their own heritage using colorful motifs of lions and dragons.
Surabaya being a port has coastal attractions too. Take a cruise on one of the cruisers and take in the water life around you. One such attraction is the decommissioned Monkasel Submarine which you can visit. The submarine had been employed as part of the Indonesian Navy.
For the shopaholics, you have the malls. Not only shopping places these tend to be entertainment places for children, therefore families pack these malls on the weekends. For example some of the larger malls are Tunjungan Plaza and Ciputra World Surabaya will pry for your attention. In addition there are street markets where locals do their trade – see Pabaen Market and the Bulak Fish Center. For street food, try the Pakuwon Food Festival where you will be psolit for choice.
