Highlights of Shanghai

Although not the capital, Shanghai is the financial hub and largest city of China. Its population is over a staggering 24.1 million. Actually the most populous city in the world. In addition to this, it is the world’s busiest container port. Testament to its on-going trade with the world as a super power.

Shanghai grew in importance following trade with the west in the 1930’s. However after communist rule in 1949, China restricted its trade to other socialist countries. In the 1990’s in its economic reform programme, China once again opened its doors to trading with the world at large. Such stimulus has enabled China to regain its position in many markets especially in the low cost sectors. Manufacturing has boomed and with it, there has been an increase in wealth amongst the rich and middle-class. Now there is a demand for luxury items to cater for these up and coming leaders.
The famed waterfront is known as the Bunde. A promenade from which you can see colonial era buildings as well as tall skyscrapers. The most prominent buildings are the 632 Shanghai Tower and the Oriental Pearl TV Tower. This area has CCTV cameras everywhere. It is somewhat intimidating but if you can forget the cameras the night view is futuristic.

As with most cities, Shanghai is impersonal because of the volume of people. English is not widely spoken. However get chatting to a local, and you will find them friendly and willing to help or direct you. Come to enjoy the food and local markets. Examples include Tian Zi Fang, A.P. Plaza Yinyang Market and Yuyuan Old Street. Besides if shopping is your weakness, then you will find many high end and low end shopping opportunities here. Mega shopping malls are everywhere such as the Shanghai IFC Mall.

Popular shopping experiences include buying tea, historic posters and made to measure suits. These can be found in Tianshan Tea City, Shanghai Propaganda Poster Art Centre and South Bund Soft Spinning Material Market respectively.

Shanghai has it all. Historic walking areas, ancient ruins and nature parks. In addition there are many theme parks including Disneyland, Happy Valley, Renmin Park and Thames Town to name a few.
