Highlights of Izmir
Izmir Turkey is steeped in history. In antiquity Izmir is known as Smyrna. Located on Turkey’s Aegean coast, the Greeks first founded the city. Then the Romans took over. But it was Alexander the Great, the king of the ancient Greek Kingdom of Macedon who rebuilt the city. The Ottoman Empire followed in the 15th century. As a result of its history Izmir hosts many interesting archeological sites worth visiting. An example include the open-air museum of Roman Agora of Smyrna.
The Kordonboyu area is the place to be, especially in summer. Lots of restaurants to whet your appetite, and fantastic sunsets over the sea. A great place for the tourist past-time of people watching.
Another area for good restaurants, especially seafood restaurants is the area around Kemeralti Market. This market sells antiques and has elegant shops from jeweller to clothes. Shop then eat.
Another must see area is Alsancak. During the day you can go window shopping. However at night it turns into the live bustle and hustle of night clubs and bars. Restaurants to suit all pockets are plentiful here.
The Tarihi Asansor is a historic 1907 elevator. It links two areas together which are 58 metres apart. Saves you walking up 155 steps. Once you reach the top you are awarded with a panoramic view to remember. Better still plan to go there to see the sunset.
If motor cars is your thing, visit the Key Museum. Here there is a collection of magnificent heritage motorcars. All in prestige condition. It may take your breath away. As may a visit to a frigate at the Izmir Muze Gemiler Mudurlugu. There is also a small Ataturk Museum dedicated to this historic leader.
Art enthusiasts may wish to visit Arkas Art Center, Ahmed Adnan Saygun Arts Center and the Izmir Museum of History and Art. Don’t confuse the latter with another museum of a similar name, the Izmir Museum of Arts & Sculpture.
For nature, you can check out the well respected Izmir Wild Life Park. Alternatively visit Pirlanta Beach or Kent Forest.
