Highlights of Kampala
Kampala is the capital of Uganda. It has a population of over 1.6 million people. However the metropolitan area of Kampala has over 6.8 million. It is one of Africa’s fastest growing cities, with a growth rate of over 4% per year.
Kampala was originally built on seven hills, with 15% of its area being slow flowing swamp areas. The usage of these seven hills were divided between the leader of Uganda, called a Kabaka, British religious missionaries, Arabic interests and an area known as Crown Lands under the Uganda Protectorate.
Outstanding landmarks to visit include the Baha’I Temple, the Gaddafi National Mosque and the Uganda Martyrs Shrine. But don’t forget to see the Kabaka’s Palace with its rich history. The hut like Kasubi Tombs may also impress.
Religious missionaries from the Protestant Church Mission Society in 1877 and the Catholic White Father in 1879 had a huge influence. Not only in religious conversion but also education and development of its capital. As such the Protestants obtained Namirembe hill, whereas the Catholics got Lubaga Hill. Two of the seven hills of Kampala. Visit Namirembe Kathedrale for the protestant prospective and Rubaga-Kathedrale for the catholic one. Guided tours are available at each.
To fully understand the history of Kampala and its evolution, a good place to start would be the Uganda Museum. One section refers to the Ugandan participation at the Olympic Games. You will be able to see artifacts through the ages from traditional drums to elaborate head dresses. Another popular museum is the Social Innovation Museum. Here you see how recent developments are really changing lives.
Whilst in Uganda of course, you may wish to travel further afield. For example a three day gorilla trekking expedition may be one of the things you yearn to do.
