Highlights of Quito
Quito is the capital of Ecuador. It lies in the Andean foothills some 2,850 metres above sea level. Moreover, its foundations are built on an ancient Incan city. Following the Spanish conquest, the colonisers left a lasting mark on its architecture, particularly in the historic centre. For example, the main square showcases impressive colonial buildings. In addition, several churches date back to the 16th and 17th centuries, offering a remarkable glimpse into the past.
Catching up with modern times, Quito offers a variety of alternative activities. For instance, you can sample craft beer at Bandido Brewing. Alternatively, take a leisurely stroll through the barrio of La Floresta to admire the colourful street art and creative urban energy.
The city is flanked by six volcanoes, giving it a dramatic natural backdrop. To experience the views firsthand, take the Teleferiqo, a gondola lift that glides up the east side of Pichincha Volcano. As a result, you’ll reach a breathtaking viewpoint ideal for capturing that perfect Instagram photo. Besides the scenery, you can enjoy a warm coffee or explore one of the hiking trails; however, make sure you are fully acclimatised before attempting the more challenging routes.
Ecuador has also gained recognition in the world of chocolate. Its award-winning Pacari chocolate continues to delight visitors. Moreover, free tastings are often available, allowing you to savour the flavours while learning about the entire chocolate-making process from bean to bar.
Its main party district is La Mariscal. Here, you’ll find an energetic mix of bars and clubs that play every genre of music imaginable. Furthermore, nightlife lovers can dance until dawn, making it a favourite spot for those seeking late-night entertainment.
If you’re looking for an affordable meal, then try Parque Navarro. This lively food area offers a variety of stalls with plenty of seating. While enjoying the outdoors, you can feast on traditional Ecuadorian dishes. In addition to being delicious, the food here is budget-friendly, making it ideal for travellers.
If you head 26 km north of Quito, you’ll reach Ciudad Mitad del Mundo. This symbolic site features the monument dedicated to the equator, from which Ecuador takes its name. On one side, you stand in the Northern Hemisphere; on the other, the Southern. Finally, it’s yet another perfect Instagram opportunity to show friends the exact spot where you stood on the middle of the world.
