Highlights of Kandy
Declared a world heritage site by UNESCO in 1988, Kandy hosts one of the most important relics in the buddhist world, the Temple of the Tooth. Indeed this has attracted a number of Buddhist monasteries in the area.
Other attractions include a large artificial lake called Kandy Lake, the Botanical Gardens and the Royal Palace. However the town is itself to one side of the Lake. Take a gentle walk around the Lake and stop off at Garden Cafe for a drink and some local food.
Moreover another big draw is the annual celebration in July/August with Kandy dancers and the parading of elephants. This is the Kandy Esala Perahera. People come from all over the world to participate in this unique celebration. But expect hotel prices to double during this period.
One tourist attraction is the Kandy Garrison Cemetery. Get a caretaker to show you around. Not surprisingly there is no entrance fee, but tip the caretaker. As a result of their dedication and knowledgeable history, this cemetery is a surprise find.
Kandy is a vibrant city with busy roads and lots of activity. Being the second largest city after Colombo, this should not come as a surprise.
It is located in the Central Province, with large rivers and parks. Some of the views are simply spectacular. Being literally in the centre of the island, there is an artery of road links in all directions, including to the capital Colombo.
Being in a central highland area of over 500 metres in altitude, temperatures are somewhat lower than the coastline. Nevertheless average temperatures are 23 to 26 C, with an average temperature range of 18 to 30 C. The dry season is December to April, with variable weather from May to July, the monsoon season and December to January. It is hottest in July. Humidity is normally 70 to 79%.
With surrounding rubber plantations and rice paddy fields, Kandy is on everyone’s list for those who tour the island with the major attraction being the Relic of The Tooth of Buddha, housed in the Temple of the Tooth.
