Highlights of Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai is the largest city in Northern Thailand, and has a population of approximately 400,000 people. It is located some 700 kms north of Bangkok.

iVisa.com The name “Chiang Mai” means “New City”, after succeeding Chiang Rai as the capital of the Lan Na dynasty in 1296. Its importance grew as a trading hub with good connections on the Ping River, on which the city flanks. Today you can still see part of the inner city walls, surrounded by a protective moat.

There are over 300 buddhist temples in the area, the most famous of which is the Wat Phra Singh. Look out for the symbol of the serpent as this represents the source of the Ping River.

Chiang Mai is also known as the “Creative City”. This can be viewed through the articles on display at the local handicraft markets, produced by northern Thai artisans. Chiang Mai’s markets are famous and are a must-do activity.

Chiang Mai is an excellent place to refresh your Thai cooking skills. Certainly visiting a local fruit and vegetable market is a must to take in the freshness of northern Thailand’s produce. In addition there are specialist courses such as fruit carving if that takes your interest.

A visit to Chiang Mai would also not be complete without a visit to a massage parlour. There are many types – some specialise in feet whilst others encompass the full body.
