Georgetown
Georgetown
Penang has a beautiful old town, known as Georgetown. Whilst aesthetically Chinese Malay in style, the food carts sell their assam laksa (noodle soup) from their steaming hot pans. Also popular is a dessert with shaved ice with coconut milk and palm sugar topped with red beans and sweet corn. This is “cendol”. Other shops ply their wares, shouting out their latest offers to get the attention of those passing by. It is simply a charming place with colonial architecture left over from British rule. History records the British as fleeing the island when Japan advanced. Leaving the locals to fend for themselves, they felt abandoned by the British.
Georgetown itself is located on the island of Penang. Nevertheless the island is linked to Malaysia mainland via a 13 km bridge. The state goes by the same name Penang. Its population of 700,000 makes it the second largest city after Kuala Lumpur. Similar to other Malaysian cities, there is a mixture of Malay, Chinese, Indian and some ex pats. It gained its label as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2008.
Street Art
One thing Georgetown is famous for is its street art. Three dimensional art painted mainly in pastel colours on the walls depict various scenes. Examples include two children on a swing, a child with a balloon and a man on a motorbike. The story goes that a Lithuanian artist trained in London, was given the task of livening up the atmosphere of the Chinese shops in the area. Little did they know how success the project would become. As a result tourists flock to get a glimpse of them. The lucky ones get a selfie.
Pinang Peranakan Museum
In this region there was a mixture of Chinese and Malays called Pernanakans. Also known as Babas and Nonyas, they were from the upper middle class that for example adapted to their new surroundings. Their cuisine is basically Chinese but made with tropical local ingredients, making it a wonderful style of fusion. Their homes contain antiques, and they had traditional beliefs. Albeit other attractions include Penang House of Music, the Colonial Penang Museum and the ASia Camera Museum to name a few. On the other hand you can always head for the gardens of Entopia.
